May 2023: Japan

Our first international trip since Italy in Jan 2020 was to Japan. I’ve been to Japan several times and usually to the same areas – Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, and Kagoshima. So we considered Nagano and Sapporo, more remote areas where than where we’ve typically gone. But, because we were spending part of our trip with family in Tokyo. We decided to stick to the typical routes – Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka. We spent several days with family in Tokyo then headed south to Kyoto-Osaka.
The rainy weather in May made me consciously pick weather-sealed gear – my Olympus OM1 Mrk III and 12-100mm f4 Pro lens primarily, plus GoPro 10 & iPhone 14 Pro. I brought my micro-four thirds system because it’s smaller size makes it great for travel. I hoped to use my Olympus Pen-F for street photography but didn’t use it as much as I’d hoped.
I also wanted to try film simulations but instead of in-camera jpgs like Fujifilm cameras can produce. I used presets in Lightroom, Photoshop, and DXO Filmpack (trial). I really enjoy how different film simulations can change the qualities of the images. I also did some intentionally Wes Anderson photos – symmetrically composing shots with a Wes Anderson attitude. I found free Wes Anderson presets for Lightroom at FreePSDvn.com.
